What are the Benefits of Sclerotherapy?

More than 80 million Americans suffer from varicose veins and spider veins. These bulgy, swollen veins are not only aesthetically displeasing, but they can also cause aches, cramps, fatigue, cramping, and other uncomfortable symptoms. Thankfully, sclerotherapy is considered to be a highly effective treatment for getting rid of varicose veins and spider veins.

Sclerotherapy is a fast, relatively painful varicose veins treatment. The doctor injects the affected vein with a chemical sclerant. This causes the vein to scar up and collapse, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins. The treated vein fades after a few weeks, typically after a couple of treatments.
Why is sclerotherapy such a popular treatment for varicose veins and spider veins? Some of the benefits of this treatment include:
  • Fast and effective – A session lasts less than 30 minutes.
  • No downtime – Normal daily activities can be resumed right away.
  • Minimal discomfort – Treatment is mostly painless, although some burning or cramping immediately following the injection may occur.

How to Protect Your Skin While Enjoying Summer

During the summer, we all like to spend more time outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather. But whether you’re hitting the beach, taking a dip in the pool, or just relaxing on your porch, it’s important that you take the necessary steps to protect your skin while enjoying the summer season.

Here are a few simple tips to help you keep your skin healthy this summer.

  • Always wear sunscreen—If you’re going outdoors during the summer, you need to wear sunscreen that’s SPF 30 at minimum. A good sunscreen will offer protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays, helping you avoid sunburn and prevent skin cancer. If you’re outdoors for an extended period of time, you should reapply your sunscreen every two hours to stay best protected.
  • Drink plenty of water—Summer and dehydration go hand-in-hand. The hot temperatures can dry you out, and dehydration can lead to a number of serious health issues. It can also affect your skin health. So, make sure you’re drinking at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day.
  • Dress to protect—Summer is a time when people like to dress down and show some skin. However, when the sun is really beating down on you, it’s best to dress in a way that protects your skin. Wear a hat, and maybe throw on a thin shirt with sleeves to protect your skin.

At Inverness Dermatology & Laser, we believe that beautiful skin starts with healthy skin. For all your skin care needs, trust our experienced, caring dermatology team. Learn more at www.InvernessDerm.com Like us on FaceBook.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

An estimated 40 million Americans have varicose veins. This condition occurs when the valves in your veins don’t close all the way, allowing blood to flow backwards through the vein, causing pooling in some areas. Those enlarged, twisted, bulgy, unsightly veins give men and women fits, and they can cause achiness, fatigue, swelling, pain, skin discoloration, restlessness, burning, throbbing, and a number of other symptoms.

What people are at risk for varicose veins? And what exactly causes varicose veins to develop?
Some common risk factor include:

  • Being overweight
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetics
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time
  • Prior surgery to the leg
  • Trauma to the leg
  • Aging
If you think you have varicose veins, you should schedule an appointment with a doctor immediately. Your doctor will perform a medical examination and may order some additional tests to see if there are any underlying conditions causing your varicose veins.

The doctors at Inverness Dermatology and Laser offer cosmetic vein treatment to patients in Hoover, Birmingham, and Chelsea Alabama areas. Click here to learn more about our vein treatmentLike us on FaceBook.

Is Restylane Safe?

Restylane treatment is commonly used as a dermal filler and as a way to diminish fine lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth, forehead, and eyes. The treatment is designed to increase elasticity structure in the skin through a small injection. Countless men and women have reported successful results with Restylane treatment over the year, making it among the most popular cosmetic dermatology procedures.

Of course, it’s always important to remember that cosmetic procedures, such as Restylane, are in fact medical treatments and need to be considered carefully. It’s important to ask the right questions and make sure Restylane truly is right for you.

One of the most important questions we get asked is whether or not Restylane is safe. Good news – Restylane is safe and very effective. Consider the following:

  • Over 20 million Restylane treatments have been performed worldwide since 1996.
  • Over 50 clinical studies have been performed to date on Restylane, and it is highly regarded because of its proven safety and efficacy.
  • Restylane was the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler aesthetic treatment to ever be approved by the FDA.

Early Medical Intervention Results in Best Acne Scar Treatment

An estimated 10 million Americans are affected by acne scars every year. For some, scarring is minimal and nothing more than a minor annoyance. For others, however, acne scars can be devastating and disfiguring.

The good news is acne scars can be treated effectively. While 95% of acne patients will suffer from some level of scarring, these scars can be treated with great efficacy if they are dealt with early on in the outbreak. The earlier proper acne treatment is administered, the lower the risks of developing serious acne scars.

With today’s acne treatments, it’s no longer necessary for anyone to suffer hopelessly from severe breakouts or to develop major acne scars. Early medical intervention can play a huge role in preventing disfiguring scars, so those who are suffering from a breakout are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to seek proper treatment and avoid long-term consequences.
The cosmetic dermatologists at Birmingham’s Inverness Dermatology and Laser offer effective acne scar treatment to help you get healthy, beautiful, scar-free skin. Visit

What You Can Expect With BOTOX Injections

When it comes to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, perhaps no other treatment is as popular as BOTOX. This FDA-approved injectable blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that actually causes skin wrinkles, helping patients get smoother, more youthful looking skin without having to undergo surgery.

If you’re interested in getting BOTOX treatment, it’s important that you know what to expect with these injections.
  •  Prior to the procedure — Before getting BOTOX injections, you may wish to get your skin numbed to combat the slight discomfort that can be experienced. There are several numbing options available, including injections, cream, and even spray.
  • During the procedure — BOTOX is injected in tiny amounts through a thin needle into the targeted areas. The size of the area being treated will typically determine how many injections are needed.
  • After the procedure —You can resume normal activities after BOTOX with no downtime. Just make sure you don’t touch or rub the treated area as it could force the BOTOX into a different area.
If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of BOTOX, contact the experienced team at Inverness Dermatology and Laser. We offer BOTOX in Birmingham, and most of our patients experience little to no downtime. Learn more at www.InvernessDerm.com. Like us on FaceBook.
