What Causes Varicose Veins?

An estimated 40 million Americans have varicose veins. This condition occurs when the valves in your veins don’t close all the way, allowing blood to flow backwards through the vein, causing pooling in some areas. Those enlarged, twisted, bulgy, unsightly veins give men and women fits, and they can cause achiness, fatigue, swelling, pain, skin discoloration, restlessness, burning, throbbing, and a number of other symptoms.

What people are at risk for varicose veins? And what exactly causes varicose veins to develop?
Some common risk factor include:

  • Being overweight
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetics
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time
  • Prior surgery to the leg
  • Trauma to the leg
  • Aging
If you think you have varicose veins, you should schedule an appointment with a doctor immediately. Your doctor will perform a medical examination and may order some additional tests to see if there are any underlying conditions causing your varicose veins.
